“There is nothing towriting. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed.”

― Ernest Hemingway

The truth is, anybody can write but it takes someone really special to go against the odds to become a great writer. Hence, if you like to be a good writer, you can surely do so. But just remember that it won’t happen overnight, you will never a whole deal of patience, perseverance, and dedication to get where Elizabeth Gilbert or Stephen King is where right now. Yes, practice will be the name of the game.

It is gratifying to know that to become a good writer, you must also be a good reader.

Reading—the good and the bad—inspires you. It develops your palate for all the tricks that writers have invented over the years. You can learn from textbooksabout the writing craft, but there’s no substitute for discovering for yourself how a writer pulls off a trick. Then that becomes part of your experience. – Roz Morris

BufferApp.com further added that: Knowing how to read and not reading books is like owning skis and not skiing, owning a board and never riding a wave, or, well, having your favorite sandwich in your hand and not eating it. If you owned a telescope that would open up the entire universe for you would you try to find reason for not looking through it? Because that is exactly what reading is all about; it opens up the universe of humour, of adventure, of romance, of climbing thehighest mountain, of diving in the deepest sea.

To support the idea that reading develops a better writer, an article in Business Insider has published Stephen King’s advice of the need to stop watching television, instead to read as much as possible.

If you’re just starting out as a writer, your television should be the first thing to go. It’s “poisonous to creativity,” he says. Writers need to look into themselves and turn toward the life of the imagination.

To do so, they should read as much as they can. King takes a book with him everywhere he goes, and even reads during meals. “If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot,” he says. Read widely, and constantly work to refine and redefine your own work as you do so.

Moving on, you also need to study your notes to become a good a good writer. Study grammar lessons again, and discover how professional authors try to construct their sentences. You also need to understand some other elements of good writing such as the pace, the tone, and the structure. Furthermore, you must learn why you are writing and to whom you are writing for. Indeed becoming a writer means never resting on your laurels, instead continuously working hard to understand new lessons and ideas.

Writing also involves constant practice. There is a need to create a habit out of writing. Contrary to what people often think of when it concerns writing, it is not something that you only do when you feel a flow of your creative juice. If you really like to write for a living then you have to discipline yourself in such a way that you can write even if you don’ feel like doing so. Also, you need to be patient enough to go on rewriting your piece until you are able to get the quality that you are after.

Now, in order to become a good writer, you need to consider the importance of getting feedback. You can ask for comments and suggestions from friends, fellow writers, editors, teachers, or from your mentor. Although these people might not represent a real audience but they can somehow give you an idea of things you need to improve when writing. Do not take things literally; remember that feedback and criticism are important for you to improve your writing skill.
