There will come a time when you can’t seem to finish a sentence; or worst, you can’t even start one. If this happens, you need to take a refresher to improve your writing. Do not worry though because everyone goes through this stage, particularly when it has been too long after you last wrote something.

So here are some tips to improve your writing style:

  1. Focus on the whole.

When you try to write, think of what the whole article will look like. The same is true when editing, you should focus on the words surrounding what you are trying to edit. It is customary to focus on a single line when editing but this should not be the case since it is important to ensure that the sentence in the whole paragraph jive with one another. So edit like you are a nosy professor who is trying to look for a mistake, even when you can’t find one at first glance!

2. Try to reread your piece from the start to the end for several times.

As you read it, you will find that a point was already discussed in the first few paragraphs and that you were able to talk about it again in your concluding sentences.

Do not proceed with editing soon after you finish writing. It is always practical to put aside your work and then you come back to it after a day or two. It is normal to find mistakes even when you are too confident that you were able to polish your words soon in the final form of your write-up. There will always be those problems of wrongly done sentence construction, clumsy grammatical mistakes, odd-sounding tone, and many more. A time-lapse will give you a new and more objective eye so you can spot mistakes in your article.

3. Have someone look at your piece and ask for his or her suggestion.

No matter how skilled you are, you will find that you will always benefit from a second opinion. Plus, you should think of the fact that your writing is usually intended for other people’s consumption. What is interesting about getting a third eye to read your work is that you need not find someone who is a better writer than you since the goal is not to have him or her revise your work. Rather, you simply need someone who can give their honest feedback. In case the person cannot get your joke or find your style irritating then it is likely that other readers will think of your work the same way. So by getting someone to help you out, you are saving yourself from the shame of bad reviews from your readers after.
